Syrian Hamsters have different types of coats some has short hair, some have long hair and their types also vary some have satin hair and some of them have rex hair. Syrian Hamsters that have short hair are known as fancy hamsters and those which have quite long hair are known as teddy bear hamsters because they look very cute with long hair.

But the one thing with long-haired hamsters is that they need some extra care as their hair will become frizzy and tangle with each other if not properly brushed and wash. The length of hair of Syrian Hamsters depends upon the amount of testosterone a male has. Rex’s type of hair has a wavy nature while the satin type hair is glossy in nature.

Types of patterns of Syrian Hamsters:

Different types of coat

Syrian hamsters can have both short and long hair, satin or rex. Syrian hamsters having short hair are called ‘fancy’ hamsters; whereas long-haired hamsters are called ‘teddy bear’ hamsters. Hamsters with long hair need additional care because of the reason that if their coat is not brushed regularly, their hair becomes matted. The length of the flowing skirt (fur) depends upon the amount of testosterone a male has. The length of fur in females is comparatively shorter than that of male hamsters. The hamsters having satin coats have a glossy shine whereas Syrians have Rex Waves in their fur.

Patterns of coat

There can be different patterns in the fur of your Syrian hamster. Different patterns in hamsters include solid, banded, dominant spot, and roan. The coat of an Oscar has a pattern of solid fur and has golden color all over. The belly of Oscar has a lighter color as compared to the coat.

A roan hamster has white stripped over a brown coat that covers its whole body from its head to rear. The color of the coat can vary. The eyes of Syrians give a reddish glow. The banded pattern is the most common of all. These hamsters have a white ring that covers the mid part of their body. The coat of the dominant spot is white and has colored spots over it. It can have small spots on its ears too. The female hamsters have a tortoiseshell coat.

Colors

Colors in hamsters are generally called agouti or self. The cheeks of the hamster are fleshy and the crescents have a lighter underside. A self-hamster has the same color coat all over the body. The most common color is black, cream, chocolate, and sable. The Syrian Hamsters come around in 14 different colors including golden hamster, brown hamster, beige hamster, black hamster, blonde hamster, cream hamster, chocolate hamster, grey hamster, dove hamster, lilac hamsters, rust hamster, mink hamster, and white hamster.

The color difference in the male and female hamsters

Color cannot be a criterion to distinguish between a male and a female hamster. A female has tortoiseshell but a Syrian hamster cannot be differentiated on the basis of color. Thus, to differentiate between a male and female Syrian hamster, you must have a look at their flank glands and their private anatomy.

Can the coat of the Syrian hamster change color?

The coat of a Syrian hamster changes a little bit color as they grow old. Just like a human being grows old, the appearance of the person changes as he grows old. Similarly, the color of the coat of the Syrian hamster changes a little bit as he grows old. The change in the coat color takes place over a very long time. It never happens suddenly overnight.

There is no need to worry about the changes in your hamster. Syrian Hamsters undergo shedding in which they shed all their body hair and then new hair will grow on their body and this is absolutely normal. Many other pets including bearded dragons also undergo shedding.

Different eye colors of Syrian hamster

The eye color of a Syrian hamster is determined by the coat color. Each coat color has a specific color for the eyes. A Syrian hamster with a cream coat can have either black or red or ruby eyes. If the coat color is blonde, cinnamon, or lilac then it can have red eyes. When the coat color is mink or copper then the eyes will be red color. These different color combinations make Syrian Hamsters more beautiful and attractive that everyone wants to buy them.

Final Thoughts

Syrian Hamsters are very small and affectionate pets that everyone wants to have at their home. One of the reasons also is that they look very cute like teddy bears and also they come in different colors, patterns, and sizes. They were known by names like teddy bears or golden hamsters. But now they are known with different names to reflect the breeds according to their looks.
