Hamsters are needed to be cleaned like any other pets. Cleaning and bathing are one of the basic grooming processes which should be taken up by the owners from the very first day. However, the cleaning process is not as easy as feeding the pets, using the right cleaning product, and making sure that the process by which the pet will be cleaned should be decided first.

Do hamsters need to be cleaned?

Yes, hamsters need to be cleaned once a week. If you keep them as a single one in a moderately sized cage then the cleaning should be done once in every week and that would be enough. If you plan to keep more than one hamster in your cage and the cage is not large enough then it would get dirtier even faster. If the cage is wide enough to provide room for more than one hamster then also the cleaning should be done more often.

This is a simple process, the more animals would be kept in a cage the more amount of waste will be produced. Thus cleaning should not be sufficient if you do that once in a week.

How To Properly Clean Your-Hamsters

Is spot cleaning the right way to clean the hamsters?

It is necessary for the owners to keep the cage of the hamsters clean. Spot cleaning is a shortcut process of keeping those areas clean. It saves your time and effort to over-clean the shelter and yet maintain a healthy atmosphere.

When you spot-clean the cage of the hamster, then a thorough cleaning can be done once in two weeks.

How often the spot cleaning should be done in the hamster’s cage?

Spot cleaning should be done daily or at least every alternate day. You should not keep the cage unclean as the poops of the hamsters may attract several kinds of microbes and bacteria. The pets can be infected by these organisms. So keeping the cage clean and making sure that the hamsters are living a good life is your duty.

Can you wash your hamsters?

Hamsters do not need regular baths, but you have to check if there is something stuck on their coat. If you find any odd things stuck there, you should give the pet a bath. Also, bathing becomes necessary if the pet has come in contact with something toxic.

Regular bathing will strip the coat of the hamster from the natural oil that is secreted from its oil gland, so you should stay away from that. Hamsters know how to keep themselves clean so you do not have to be bothered about the regular cleaning of the creature.

How often should I clean my hamster?

Hamsters are much clean by habit and what you have to do is to keep their shelter clean. So when you spot clean their cage, which is done once in every two days, just scoop up the poop and throw it outside, also the area where it has urinated needed to be spot cleaned.

To scoop out the dirt you can use a pair of gloves or a scoop. The part of the bedding which is soiled should also be removed from the cage.

How do you get rid of the hamster smell?

Cleaning the cage thoroughly once a week or in two weeks makes the area or the room smells fresh. If the cage is a larger one then the cleaning can be done in longer intervals. After cleaning you should use a deodorizer so the cage stays free from the odor.

The bedding item should be selected wisely.  When you use some wrong bedding in the cage then it will add to the smell of the waste material. Also, it will not absorb the smell of poop or urine and will give out a different odor along with feces.

If your hamster smells too bad then spot cleaning should be done every day. In case you find that the pet is defecating way too much then taking the pet to the vet is necessary.

Litter training is the right way to keep the area clean while keeping pets at home. If you can litter train your hamster then it would not poop or urinate in random places. You will also be able to clean the particular bowl or area and do not have to waste time finding the poops when it is outside the shelter.

Using an air purifier is also a method adopted by many hamster owners. This makes the air smell fresh. If you are bothered about the smell of the pet then use the air freshener at the house.

Is hamster urine harmful to humans?

Not always, but sometimes the urine of the hamsters can infect humans with a disease called LCMV infection. This is not specifically originating from hamster urine but from rodent urine. Also, this germ can infect us from droppings or saliva.

This virus can affect us when it comes in contact with broken skin or open pores like the nose, mouth, or ears. Also if an infected rodent bites you, the disease will be spread.

Why do hamsters stink?

If you find your pet hamster smells it can be due to a dirty cage. Sometimes poor hygiene can also be the cause. Also, the cage may have become dirty and needs immediate cleaning. The diet or the age of reaching sexual maturity can be other causes of stinking.

Do clean the cage from time to time and when the problem persists, check the pet with the vet.

Do hamsters get mad when their cage is cleaned?

Hamsters get used to the smell of their environment. Along with visual recognition, the smell of the place also helps them to get settled. When you clean their cage too often and change the bedding all over, the smell changes as well. Then it may have some problems settling into the new setup.

However cleaning the bedding partially is advised, so the cage remains clean and the hamster does not feel uncomfortable due to the new smell of bedding.
