Most hamsters are worried about escaping their hamsters from their cage and they try to do the same thing number of times. So as a pet owner you need to find out the reasons why your hamster is trying to escape the cage again and again. Maybe they are bored inside the cage, they need adventure or something else, or maybe there are some loopholes in the cage from where they can escape easily.

If you want that your hamster not escape from the cage again make sure they have a large cage so they can play inside happily or make that escape-proof. You can also put some toys inside the cage and make places where they can hide and play. If they will feel happy inside the cage, they will not try to escape from it.

Several methods to prevent hamsters from escaping the cage

There may be several reasons behind the escaping of the hamster from escaping the cage. One of the reasons could be their cage maybe it is so small that they can’t be happy living inside it or there may be places in the cage from where they can easily escape. So you need to put some attention to the cage too. Here are a few measures that you can take to prevent the hamster from escaping the cage.

Go for a correct cage

1. Choose an aquarium tank instead of a bar cage:

You can buy an aquarium cage for your hamster instead bar cage. It will be more spacious and smooth to play for them and use a wired top surface for adequate passing of air. Using weights in the center of the upper lid is enough to cover it. The hamster will be safe inside the aquarium tank.

2. Don’t purchase plastic or thin wood cages:

Usually, avoid purchasing thin wood or plastic cages for your hamsters. Despite their being small but their teeth are very sharp so they can easily chew this kind of thin material and easily make a hole to escape from them. Eating plastic is also not safe for them. But if you are willing to buy then go for some thicker substance which they can’t chew with their teeth.

3. Change loose or broken wired cage:

If you find that any of the wires are loose or kind of broken in a place you need to change the cage of your hamster. Hamsters can easily break it and make them out of the cage or sometime in this process may injure themselves from the broken wires.

4. Choose a cage with minimum bar spacing:

If you are going to buy a cage for your little hamster then always remember to go for a minimum bar spacing of 0.5 inches or less. Ensure that there should not be that much space between the bars from where the hamster can get itself out of the cage again and again.

But it is advisable not to use a wired cage if the hamster is very small as they can fit themselves sometimes between the wires of the cage. This is one of the reasons not to buy a cage having much spacing between the bars.

Shift hamster’s attention to other things

1. Put chew toys in the cage:

To draw the attention of hamsters, provide them with some chew toys so they become busy playing with them. When they have the urge to chew something, they can chew their toys instead of the bars of the cage and harm themselves. Playing with their toys keeps them busy and they will not escape from their cage.

2. Provide space to play inside the cage:

Provide hamsters some hidden places inside the cage so they can hide and can play quietly. It will make them feel happy and sometimes peaceful. You can also provide some kind of thick material plastic tunnel in their cage so they can play inside it.

3. Spend time with your hamster:

Spending time with the hamsters makes them feel happy and gives them warmth. Taking the hamster out of the cage and playing with him will make him very joyful. Keeping the hamster in your hands, pampering him, watching TV, and talking with him make the hamster so calm and peaceful. Keeping the hamster sometimes out of the cage will reduce the urge of the hamster to escape from the cage at any time.

4. Give your hamsters occasional treats:

Sometimes give your hamster an occasional treat that includes their favorite things but in limited quantity. Keep some fruits but not citric fruits like oranges. Add some strawberries, bananas, and grapes mixed with some green veggies or leaves like cucumber, pumpkin, spinach, cauliflower, etc. If a hamster is happy in its place, he will not make any kind of attempt to escape from the cage.

Find the reasons behind escaping of hamsters and cure them

As a pet owner, you need to find out the reasons behind this behavior of hamsters. There could be several reasons including the space provided to them is not enough. They need more space to play and jump inside the cage, maybe they feel boredom inside the cage as there is nothing that excites them inside it.

Some hamsters need adventure and exciting activities which they are missing living in the same small cage daily. So above mentioned things may help you to get out of this problem and what you need to do to stop your hamster from escaping its cage.
