Hamsters are well adapted to drinking from the bowl. When one is adopting a pet like a hamster he or she should know that these pets will need an adequate amount of water throughout the day and also it will be necessary for the owner to keep the water ready near them.

Hamsters would not drink their water from any random places and that is not healthy or safe for them. But they can drink from the bowl when they are accustomed to the habit of drinking water from a particular bowl. Also, the bowl should be kept in a visible place for them. Many owners consider keeping the bowl near their shelter or inside their cage.

Can Hamsters Use Water-Bowls

How can you make the hamster drink from a bowl?

Usually, hamsters are intelligent enough to drink from a bowl that is kept near them. When you are bringing home a baby hamster then it would suitably be adjusted with the drinking and it will surely drink from the bowl on its own.

Hamsters should be brought near the water bowl at a very young age, and then they should be made to drink water from the bowl so that they understand that it is necessary for them to drink from the bowl.

With time they will gradually learn that the water bowls are meant to be their water source and they will learn to drink from there. This will help them to stay hydrated, which is much necessary for these small creatures.

Should a hamster have a water bowl?

Hamsters should have a particular bowl to have water from. The sides of the bowl should be high so the creature does not fall inside the bowl. The water bowl should not be very deep or else it will have the chance of getting the hamster drowned. The water of the bowl should be regularly changed or else the stagnant water may get shabby and bacteria may start breeding.

The water bowl for the hamster should be regularly cleaned and it would also be made of nontoxic material. The water given to the hamster can be from natural sources, but few owners prefer to provide mineral water for their hamsters.

Is a water bowl better than a water bottle for hamsters?

Water bottles are sometimes given by the owners to their hamsters to drink water from. This comes in handy when the owner is taking the hamster on a road trip. Bottles that are made for the hamsters usually have specific features that will allow them to drink the water. It will make them hydrated even when they are on the go. The bottles are useful when there is a problem with keeping the bowl in a stable place.

But at home, it is better to provide water in a bowl to your hamster. Bowl offers a flat surface and you can measure how much the hamster is drinking from there. You should always be watchful of the amount of water drank by the hamster. Or else it would not be sufficient for the little creature to drink enough or stay well.

How long can hamsters go without water?

Without water, a hamster can survive for 3-4 days depending upon the food they are having and the atmosphere they are in. A matured hamster of normal health can survive this much time without falling ill. You will be wondering how the little creature is not having any water but the reality is they can actually manage to stay without water for a long time as they do not drink that frequently when they are in the wilderness.

They normally do not have much thirst and also sometimes do not have the access to drink water. But when you are in charge, you should try to make the small creature drink regularly from their bowl.

How often should the water in the bowl be changed for the hamster?

The bowl of the water should be kept clean and the water should be changed daily to make the hamster drink only fresh and clean water. Also, the bowl should be regularly checked for leaks. Sometimes the water gets dirty by the dust or any insects that are around in the environment.

Cleaning the bowl and regularly filling it with fresh cool water should be mandatory for the hamster owners.

Is it necessary for the hamster to have both a water bottle and a water bowl?

Some owners want to ensure that their pets are having enough water throughout the day and thus, they make sure to provide a bottle along with a bowl of water. The bottles come with vacuum action which lets the hamster drink when it comes near the bottle and sucks the water. The bowl on the other hand is always left to drink the hamster from. Bowls have the visual effect of water available before the hamster so it is easy for the pets to drink from them.

Keeping both options open for the hamster ensures that if the pet does not drink from one source, it will go to the other one. If the water of one container gets dirty or contaminated then also the pet will have another source of water ready. However, the owner needs to check the bowls and bottles regularly to make sure that the containers are clean and not damaged.

Can you fill the bowl with mineral or boiled water for the hamster?

It is good for the hamsters to have fresh water. If you boil the water in some cases the mineral of the water gets evaporated and that will make the hamster lack those minerals. Also giving them lukewarm or warm water is not advised. They will not drink the water if it is not at room temperature.

Make sure that the water that you provide the hamster with is free from dust or any germs. Giving them mineral water is fine as long as it is not expired. Cold water is not suitable for hamsters as it freezes the small body of your hamster.

Giving them distilled water is a good idea and it is practiced by many owners. Distilled water is obtained from the water vapor of the boiling of water and it retains all the goodness of the water but eliminates germs and viruses.
