Hamsters are excellent pets for the ones who wish to have a small pet and do not have the extra time to take care of them. Just a small cute thing moving and running around you when you are home, and nothing much to be bothered about – that is what a hamster can offer you is your pet.

Hamsters are also good when you be cozy with them and hold them, they do not feel stressed during the proximity once they are bonded with their human owners. Thus you can safely touch and cuddle them when you want.

Do hamsters like to be petted?

Hamsters are quite adorable and they also like to be cuddled by their owners. But they open up a bit slowly. At first-time hamster owners, it will be a bit aloof when they will first hold or pet their hamsters. But with time they will feel the bond with their pets as the hamsters will be stronger with time. In fact, after some days the hamsters come closer to their human on their own and they quite like the experience of being cuddled.

Hamsters Everything You Need To-Know

Are pet hamsters easy to take care of?

When you are searching for a low-maintenance pet then hamsters will be at the top. They are quite easy to take care of. They have some basic maintenance requirements and if those are fulfilled they are good to stay in your company. Food and water come on the top priority list as for any living creature. Food should be given which is nutritious and in good amount. They need fresh water and an adequate amount.

As hamsters are quite active little creatures they need to have lots of exercise every day. So as a responsible owner, you have to make arrangements for that.

Do hamsters stink?

Hamsters are not stinky and they are easily cleaned. But you have to make sure that their cages are regularly cleaned. If you are not regular in cleaning their home it will give out a bad smell. They do not need regular cleaning but once a week is necessary to keep the hamsters in good health.

All the beddings should be taken out of the cage and a mild detergent mixed with some lukewarm water will be the right solution to clean their cage. The old bedding should be thrown away and a new line of bedding material should be spread on the cleaned cage. Then you can shift the pet there.

Do hamsters get attached to their owners?

Hamsters get attached to their owner, but not to every human that comes to the house or pets it. They get attached selectively and their attention span would be longer for one or two people. So if you plan to bring your hamster to a friend’s party it may not be such a good idea.

However, if you have a party at your house then the hamster would not be a spoilsport. It may just tolerate friends and unknown people but they would not show the level of affection that it shows with you.

Do hamsters bite?

Hamsters are mostly calm-natured creature that seldom gets aggressive. They are not into biting unless they are very much scared. Biting is not their offensive but defensive technique and they try to protect themselves from the predator or enemy, whom they think can harm them by biting.

The biting of the hamsters hurt a bit, so if your pet hamster finds it fun to bite playfully at your hand, then it should be discouraged.

Can you keep the hamster in a cage?

Animals should never be kept in a smaller enclosure than is required for their flexible movement. If your hamster is kept in a very small cage then it would feel rather suffocating and that should not be encouraged. The hamsters, when kept in a smaller space, may feel a “cage rate” which is a phobia or repelling behavior towards the cage.

This makes them stressed as they are active creatures and need more space than only their body size. So keeping hamsters within a cage is fine as long as you are arranging for a wide and spacious cage.

Are hamsters noisy at night?

Yes, when adopting hamsters, you should be aware of the fact that they make sounds at night. They can utter sounds like chattering, and that is enough to disrupt the sleep of the people who are nearby. So in any case you can keep the cages of the hamsters far away from your bedroom.

They make quite a lot of noise and also may not sleep throughout the night.  Hamsters do not sleep or rest at the night and stay active the whole time.

Can hamsters be left alone?

As for the working people, always keeping the pet company is not something easy. Hamsters can manage to stay alone for 7-8 hours provided they have ample food sources and water near them. They are originally from the desert area where they search for food for the whole day. They may or may not live in a group and thus, they can manage to stay alone for a long time.

Do hamsters have periods?

As hamsters are mammals, the female ones can have periods as that is part of their reproductive system. They can get pregnant after they get their period. Monthly vaginal bleeding is a sign of the period. For the hamsters, this happens seven times a month.

How long does it take to tame a hamster?

Hamsters do not need much effort from their owners’ side to get accustomed to a new place and new owner. Within two-three days’ time, they get quite friendly and settled. They are quite friendly creatures and thus would be rather curious about their new household.

Can hamsters make you sick?

There are some viruses that are carried by hamsters. Salmonella is one such virus that is spread by hamsters. Adults can be infected by salmonella if their pet hamsters catch this disease. Sometimes if pregnant women get affected by this virus then their babies can become sick too.

Should I keep the hamster in my room?

Yes, you can keep the hamster in your bedroom if your pet is comfortable there. But the cage should not be kept in direct sunlight as that is too harsh for the hamsters. Hamsters need to be kept in a warm place but not in direct sunlight. Also, you should have enough fresh air in your room which is healthy for the pets.  We have earlier mentioned that hamsters make sounds at night time so they may disturb your sleep. While keeping their cage in the room you should also keep that in mind.

Do hamsters get bored in their cage?

You can add a wheel in the hamster’s cage to make sure that it does not feel bored. They like to be engaged and active all the time, so you should give those toys an opportunity to make them busy. The hamsters even do not always sleep at night so they can play with the wheel then.

You as the owner of these little creatures should be able to find some ways to keep them engaged. Thus they will not be bored in their cage.

What is not liked by the hamsters?

Hamsters love to be in some free and peaceful place. So when you keep hamsters, make sure that your house has corners where there is little noise, fresh air, and light. Hamsters do not like to be in a clumsy place where there would be harsh sounds from a TV set or kitchen gadgets.  A corner where the hamster can live peacefully will be ideal for this pet.

Also, they cannot stand the strong smell. So it should not be kept somewhere where the smell of food or other things disturb it.

What should you do when you first get the hamster?

Hamsters should not be disturbed when they are first brought to a new house. They should be left for some hours.  You should provide it with food and water at the right time but do not give it too much attention. In fact, at this stage, you should not even gaze at it for long as that will make it uncomfortable.

After a few days, you can just give it a few minutes time at a stretch. Keeping it company for a short period will gradually help it to get adjusted to your presence. This way the hamster will slowly be accommodated in the new place and owner.

Is hamster poop harmful to humans?

Hamsters do not cause many diseases in humans.  When it comes to their feces, it is nothing very toxic. But when the hamster carries a disease like a salmonella in their poop then it becomes dangerous for humans. However, you should always use a tray to collect the poop and the bedding should be changed once a week. Thus there would be no reason to get harmed by the poop of the hamsters.
