Can Hamsters Eat Grapes?

Grapes and many such fruits which are tasty for our human taste buds may not be suitable for our pets. We often make it a habit of sharing our food, at least the raw ones which do not have spices or oil on them. But does that mean all the raw fruits and vegetables are suitable and in fact nutritious for them? Let us find out if grape, sweet, and rather yummy fruit is good for the hamsters or not.

Hamsters can be given grape but the amount should be moderate. Grape usually does not contain any toxic element to harm the hamster but the high quotient of sugar in this fruit may make the hamster sick, or obese or can cause a shot of high blood sugar level.

Can you give grapes as treat to the hamster?

Yes, fruits such as grapes should be given to the hamster as treats. The hamsters are seen to love the sweet fruits as treat and thus, you can provide them with these fruits. At one time you can only give two grapes to a mature hamster.

Yes, the skin of the grape does not contain anything harmful for the pet hamster. Some owners prefer to peel off the skin of the grapes in order to make things safe for their pets. However, if you are offering the grapes for the first time then you can take the skin off the grapes as the hamsters may not like the skin or it may cause them some irritation in the digestive system.

However, not peeling the grape is also good, but you need to wash the grapes really well so there is no pesticide or impurity left on the fruits.

How many grapes can you give to your hamster?

Hamsters can digest only a few numbers of grapes at one time. The grapes should not be given to them as regular food, as it will cause them problems in digestion. In a week grapes can be given to your pet hamster only twice. You have to check the body weight of your pet and giving too many grapes can also increase it.

One whole grape is too large for the hamsters, so you should offer the hamster pieces of the grape. You can give them two grapes by cutting them into small pieces and removing the seeds.

Blood sugar is a problem among hamsters too, so you will not want your pet to suffer from such a problem, thus giving it a moderate amount of grapes is the right way to deal with that.

Do hamsters like to eat grapes?

Yes, hamsters love to gorge on grapes. Most hamsters love this fruit from day one. They would not spare it if you give them a lot. Thus you have to keep the measure in check and offer them only a few. They may over-eat this fruit and then they can fall sick due to indigestion.

Is grape good for the hamsters?

Grape contains a good amount of vitamins and a few minerals, so yes, this is a healthy fruit for the hamsters. Apart from vitamin C, there are minerals like phosphorus, magnesium, and potassium. Vitamin K is also found in this fruit.

Vitamin C boosts the immunity of the pet hamster. This vitamin ensures that your pet does not fall sick due to cough and cold. Also, this is the vitamin responsible for keeping the pet away from allergies. Vitamin k ensures that the blood clotting works perfectly when there is any cut on the body.

Phosphorus and calcium help the consumer, here the hamster, to have a healthy skeletal system. The bones get strong. Also, the fiber portion of the grape makes the fruit good for the stomach, as it helps in maintaining good gut health.

Grapes have some properties that are necessary for the health of the hamster. But regular feeding of the grapes is not ideal for the hamsters as it may cause several other health problems to them.

Why grapes are harmful to the hamsters?

Grape is a high sugar food and that is why this fruit is not ideal for the hamsters in high amounts. Too much sugar can cause diabetes among us as well as among hamsters. The amount advised for the hamster to be given is only a spoonful once or twice a week.

What problems can take place when the hamsters are eating grapes?

When you are giving grapes to a hamster then you should check if the pet gets diarrhea after eating them. Also, loose stool is a common problem seen among hamsters after eating too many grapes or eating grapes for the first time. So it is advised to give them one grape only at the first time of feeding.

If grape does not suit the hamster then it may have problems like lack of appetite. It will not eat the regular amount of food, nor will it show regular energy. This means that the grape is not digested in the system of the hamster and it will suffer for a few days until the grape is out of its system.

Diarrhea does not last for longer than three days. So if your pet hamster is suffering from diarrhea for more than three days then you should get it checked by the vet.

Can all breeds of hamsters eat grapes?

A few breeds of hamsters come with different medical features than the other ones. So when it comes to eating grapes, which is a fruit high in sugar, dwarf Chinese hamsters are not suitable for eating grapes, even in limited amounts. This is because this breed of hamsters comes with an 85% more chance of getting affected by diabetes. Thus they should not eat any fruit or food that is higher in sugar content.

Campbell’s hamsters have the same problem as the dwarf Chinese hamster and they can also get diabetic if they are fed grapes twice a week.
